CA3LE reacted to XANAVirus in Set identifiers on previously-done speed tests.
    Hi,

    I've got an idea.
Why not let us set identifiers (like 'Home', 'Office', etc.) on our previously-done speed tests?

I just found out that you had that feature, and it would make it much easier to separate my home network results from my university results, etc.

I've already done plenty of speed tests.
I never knew about the feature previously and so all my different connections are just grouped under my results.
I can't filter them unless I choose a specific connection ID (which isn't the best of dynamic addresses like mine).

CA3LE got a reaction from Pgoodwin1 in What software do you use to test my speed?
    Hey John,

Yeah, it's a program I wrote, I've been developing it since I was 15... I turn 32 in November.  The source is closed but I do allow you to host a test using your server resources.  Basic LAMP server gets the job done.  https://testmy.net/make-a-speed-test for more info.  Totally free, works with all my tools, extremely stable, requires very little resources and is the same core I use for my own mirrors.  This is however intended for people hosted on 100 Mbps, 1000 Mbps and higher uplinks.  But I have allowed home users and local testing for cool people.  The architecture and concept has been proven and tested under all circumstances, by myself and many smarter than me.  Local and out to the net, time after time it performs equally well and matches what's really happening across the network interface.  The whole reason I released self hosting was to have it scrutinized, almost immediately people did just that. Here's one example of someone who put my methods under the microscope... https://testmy.net/ipb/topic/30731-multithread/#entry339762

I hope you like what I've built and share it.  My traffic builds by word-of-mouth only.

    Kinds regards,
    - Damon - TestMy.net

Extra note from Damon: TMN runs proprietary software, developed by myself solely for this purpose. Sorry but the source is closed.

CA3LE reacted to ItZMuRdA in Some Serious Upload Issues, ISP Problem?
    Hi all,

Hoping some of you may be of assistance, although I'm fairly confident my issue is on my ISP's end and they fail to acknowledge it.

I've been live streaming on a daily basis using Open Broadcaster Software (and have also posted this on their tech support forums) for over a year now with great success; only in the past few weeks have I started to have frame drop issues with no major changes to my settings to cause it. Some days (like Thursday), it is terrific. I streamed for many hours at 3k bitrate CBR with absolutely 0 dropped frames the entire time. Yesterday, I couldn't even get my stream up at 3k, let alone 2k bitrate for more than 30 seconds before bitrate dropped so low into the red that it disconnected the stream. This happened three different times thereafter. As I said, I stream at 3k bitrate, yet my ISP currently quotes me 101down/35up (which is reflected by my 110down/37up score on speedtest.net -- don't hate me for quoting an Ookla test).

egardless of the inaccuracy of those tests, I think I should still be able to stream a measly 3kbps without having issues if I'm seeing more than 10x that on Ookla. When I use testmy.net, however, I got a rather awful 3.4mb upload speed with a 12mb test when connecting to the default (Dallas), and 5.1mb when connecting to Washington D.C. (the closest server in proximity to me) with the same test.

I actually believe that somewhere in here may lie the problem. I originally paid extra with my ISP for 50down/8up, but they recently boosted our service even higher to about 101down/35up, and I was grandfathered in as part of that change that happened on July 15th (documentation below). I made sure to upgrade my router (Netgear R6300) firmware and even took their advice and replaced my modem with the newest one they offer. I also upgraded any LAN/ethernet-related drivers, got a new ethernet cable, tried streaming from both my gaming and streaming PC (obv. with different motherboards), tried both the NY and VA twitch servers, and just about anything you can think of on my end. My ISP says everything looks fine on their end, and I'm sure it does, as whenever I run SpeedTest.net (which they suggest, sadly) I pass with flying colors.

Here's the info on my recent ISP changes:

I realize this isn't a testmy.net issue, but I'm hoping the bright minds here may be able to alert me to some sort of flaw that either I can fix, or that I can point my ISP in the right direction with, as I stream on a daily basis as a means of earning revenue and it is a huge bummer to let all of my viewers down with something that is seemingly outside of my control.

If there is any additional info that I can provide, or if you have any questions, please let me know. Thanks so much for your time and assistance.

Thanks for the reply, TriRan. I do in fact stream at 720p, but I have an issue with dropping frames even when I'm just streaming my desktop, or heck even nothing for that matter. I did as you suggested and connected the streaming PC directly to the modem and ran it earlier today, literally just streaming my desktop at 720p through a capture card and repeatedly had the same issues. The dropping of frames I believe is related directly to the upload spiking, as the bitrate drops drastically (sometimes down to 0kbps) during the stream, followed by about 100~ frames dropped while it gets back up to normal speed.

I also just spoke to my ISP for 50 minutes on the phone but they once again can't verify any issue on their end. I'm going to try to arrange having a technician come out here and reproduce the issue while he is present, but if you have any other suggestions or useful bits of info that I can relay to my ISP, it is greatly appreciated.

Also, I'm sure you guys know how to use your own site, haha, but here's a link to my tests including a upload auto-test I ran earlier today if it helps you verify my issue at all.

Well first and foremost streaming at a 3k bitrate is all well and fine but it also depends on what resolution your streaming I'm assuming at least 720p maybe even 1080p? back when I used to stream I streamed 1080p at 2.2k bitrate and it required a solid 3-4Mbps upload rate from what I read you need somewhere around 10Mbps upload to upload a 3k with a decent audio quality aswell at 1080p your upload should be plenty fast enough... The first thing I would do is bypass your router and connect your streaming computer directly to your modem and retest this will be a process of elimination so bare with us and if it turns out its your isp the only solution is to call and complain daily till its fixed I've had issues like that before aswell and my isp swore it was my issue when it turns out it was a bad amplifier at their local node in my neighborhood

they just finished laying fiber down our street; not sure when they go "Live", but we're on the List...tired of the slow DSL dry-loop; so, please tell me...how is the new fiber...looks like your getting 80 down...whew...I've on the the 'up-to-6' ATT plan for years now, and it rarely gets past 5, let me tell you...but for the most part, I can still stream netflix, or Uverse movies, youtube stuff without too many problems...(sometimes I tweak the system...shut down all the background stuff going on to help out)--

    --But heck, with 80...it must be screaming!...Please let me ask?...Do you use a proxy server?...I found that HotSpotShield has my browsing drop 1...and sometimes it c r a w l s ........checked for virus by ms system checker...nothing!...run win7, 3GHZ dual cpu;

Had to change out the modem/router...the old 2wire was causing drops...the new netgear n300 is pretty smooth so far...except when I run the proxy server...Tell me if you experience similar loss of bandwidth?
    Thanks

You're one of the lucky ones. Charter believes in the zero maintanace policy. Don't fix it until it is "clearly broke". Everytime I have called I get the same line:: unplug router, unplug modem power, unplug cable, wait 30 seconds replug. So what -- that does not fix bad connections. Charter is never at fault... if this small coastal town had a choice I would use it. Tech support is bad, redundant, and solves nothing. Additionally they over sell bandwidth, after 5:00pm try a speedtest. I pay for 30Mps down but looking at modem I'm partioned to 20Mps which I very seldom have access to.

CA3LE got a reaction from iceb in Why no TIP summary graph for Upload Test ?
Sorry, my dog has been very sick so I didn't have a chance to reply yet.

Currently TiP (Test in Progress) measurements are only on download speed tests over 1.5 MB.  I'm developing the same concept for the upload speed test but at this time it doesn't have that capability.  Keep visiting, that and much more will be released before you know it.  ... it would be great to see that much detail in the upload test too.  But it's not easy to pull off.  I have some ideas of how to do it, we'll just have to see if I can get it to come together.

Also note TiP is disabled on the multithread speed test.  In the future I may make those work together.

One thing you can do is use a network monitor of some kind during the test.  Personally on Mac OSX I just use Activity Monitor most of the time (which comes with OSX).  It's not very detailed but it can still provide a good idea of the curve.

Here's the Activity Monitor / Network during that test

... green spike is the initial loading of form data, the red is the data being uploaded back.  I actually spike at ~1.3 MB/s but it takes time to build that speed so my overall score is reduced.   ...information that will be nice to see right in your browser.  But right now, only on the download test.

I see that you're using Windows you could try Bit Meter 2 (simple, free...).  Want more, search Google for something like "network speed monitor" -- to get deeper detail on what's actually happening across your network adapter, find a program you like and use it in conjunction with TestMy.net.

    hope this helps,
    -D

CA3LE got a reaction from Melvyn Figueroa in Post your speed and how much you pay monthly
Well... your upload is all of those numbers    -- you're seeing how the browser choice effects upload speed to websites.  I recommend that you test with the browser that provides the fastest result.  The fastest result is going to be closest to your actual speed... the slower speeds are being caused by browser inefficiency.  As you've just displayed this isn't only a Internet speed test... it's also a great way to benchmark performance between browsers.       --- other speed tests out there don't work this way because the plugins that they use bypass much of the browser... imagine that a flash or java speed test is actually a program within a program.  Truly, you're running the test through Flash or java protocol, not really the browser.  The browser in that instance is merely a frame holding the third party program... that in turn can cause the test to miss MANY common issues that slow down your browsing experience.

What I show you is the speed at which things load in your browser.  I could have made it a thousand different ways but my thought was that the average Internet user is spending their time in the browser.  Also, testing outside of the browser requires either a program running outside of the browser, Flash or Java.  Flash... is faulty,  Java inconveniences people who don't have it and so does downloading and installing programs..... so I built mine with PHP and HTML5 so that people could just load the site and do what they came to do without frustration.  I aim for 100% compatibility with a single program. Others do it differently... all I know is that time and time again TestMy.net passively detects physical issues that others fail to pick up on.  Some of the things I've seen and heard it do have amazed and baffled me... and I wrote the program!  I don't get how it does it sometimes but it does.  The forums here are littered with accounts.  I also know this, if everything is in order and running correctly... you'll max your connection out here.  TestMy.net is just a much harder test to ace but isn't that what a benchmark should be?
