From what I have seen.. the sounds dampining materials, the stuff you stick on the inside of your case, acts like insulation.. So if you have a heat problem or are running a little bit warm.. it is just going to be amplified by that stuff.. However, I do think that the rubber gaskets work... I was rather impressed by the difference that it made on one of my cases.
  8. try the what coknuck said.. where are you going to college?? BTW welcome to the forum!
  9. neither.. i guess they dont make it any more.. it isnt on their site..
  10. If it inst a professional install then you might have to... I think it sets up the PPPoE via command line so that the user doesnt..

  12. You should be able to select the port speed for the wan port.. check the firmware like dlewis said.. They would be shooting themselves in the foot if they can do 10/100 on the wan port..
  13. they are pretty solid.. they are know more for their nas product I think.. but they have been around for a while.. I think they may have had one of the first 54g routers available to the general public. The other one to check out is dlink's... I have one of their wireless ethernet bridges.. it works really well..

it is basically a voltage regulator that allows you to control the fan speed. You can build you own.. I built one of my case about 4 or 5 years ago.. I will dig up the pics.. It was just a simple on/off switch but you would be amazed how much it helped.. One other thing.. If you already have a case fan in the computer make sure that you are not creating a vacume inside the case.. otherwise that will not help the cooling system.
  15. No-ip should work as php pointed out... basically it assigns a static domain name to a dynamic address.. you run their client on your router and it updated the DNS servers when your WAN IP changes... You might experience some loss of connectivity when/if the WAN is changed.. as it takes about 5-10 minutes for the DNS to refresh.
  16. Amd is predicted to launch the quad-core in 2007.. http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/cpu/display/20040813040951.html A core duo would work great for you needs.. what type of databases are you planning to run? The other way to go would be to get an AMD A64.. they are blowing out all of the 939 processors.. so getting one for cheap should be too hard.. the problem is that it is going to be a pain to upgrade...

  22. If you understand the basics you are better off than most people.. If you are setting up a production environment then yea.. you might want to read some books or manuals first.. There really isnt to much harm that you can do with the consumer stuff.. it isnt going to break, crash, freeze, or blow up if you connect it wrong.. If he is looking for the basics/fundamentals then yea head to the library and get the dummies book.
  23. I dont know of any really good networking books... I think it is just one of those things you do based on trial and error.. I mean you can go out an cisco book.. but that will teach you their way of doing it.. everyone has a different way and no one way is correct as long as you have the fundementals..
  24. interesting.. that is the first cached test I have seen in a while.. Are you running firefox?
