  1. Most of the time you are going to use the same as securing a wifi network.. The use of WEP or better WPA.. There is of course radius... which would require another computer to run.. Basically you would authenticate yourself to the network.. you would need 2 nics to be able to do this..
  2. very nice set.. u have a sound card to power those?
  3. Yeah that sounds right.. I would either use cable select or set the burner as master and the rom device as slave..
  4. Finally some one got their hands on one of Bigfoot Network's killer NICs.. http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MTE1MywxLCxoZW50aHVzaWFzdA== for $279.00... it better make coffee, do my laundry, and maybe my math homework.
  5. You need to forward the port.. what router do you have.. the linksys routers are known to have problems with torrent traffic when they are running the standard firmware.. Check here for more details http://www.portforward.com/
  6. Found this interesting.. Dell is tied for first as far as how green they are... I bet this changes once they get their 14 million batteries back.. :haha: http://www.greenpeace.org/international/campaigns/toxics/electronics/how-the-companies-line-up
  7. I would go with the 635... It is a cool phone.. but I would want a larger screen so you could use the mobile os..
  8. I would ask them what exactly the problem is.. If it is something one their network then I would think by law that they need to fix it... If it is damaging your equipment then you need to let them know this kinda of stuff... if they continue to give you hassles call them and see if they will work out a price break for you.. Paying $45 or whatever it is up to now for the speeds that you have are just outragous. I would say some where around $20 would be reasonable. If they refuse to do anything I would then file a complaint with the FCC and the BBB and maybe if you have a friend in the legal business write them a letter.. However, that being said.. if it is inside your house.. then there is nothing they are going to do for you.. The booster is never a good idea.. It really messes with the signals.. and 99.9% of the time the techs should install the internet to go around a booster.. I would just ask then post back what they said... BTW welcome to the forum!
  9. I would say no.. unless you are going to get the data plan as part of you calling plan.. If you are.. then I would look into the Motorola Q if you are on verizon. I dont see the point in getting a smart phone if it has such a small screen.. http://www.motorola.com/motoinfo/product/details.jsp?globalObjectId=113
  10. there should be an option in every program to kill this.. the other way to do it is throught services.msc.. start-> run-> services.msc press enter. or msconfig.. I think it is better to do it via every program or services.. msconfig can get pretty confusing on what you really need and what you dont.
  11. You dont have to get that one.. that is the "top" of the line at the moment.. and Audigy 2 will also work just fine..
  12. This is far too important to let it pass.. For all of those who are just getting started using linux or have choosen a distro this is an excellent guide! Ubuntu: http://easyubuntu.freecontrib.org/overview.html (Gets all of the vital stuff you need installed driver.. etc.) http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu_dapper (Newest Version) http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu (Older version 5.10) http://www.wired.com/news/technology/software/0,71660-0.html?tw=rss.index (Good FAQ before you try anything out..) Fedora Core 5: http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Fedora_fc5 Mandriva: http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Mandriva Making linux installs easier.. http://www.instalinux.com/ It creates a custom network install iso disk.. 13. I didnt think you could do that on the Motorola modems.. I thought it was one or the other.. Router would be the way to go..
  14. looks good to me.. One thing that I would change the keyboard/mouse combo.. I believe bestbut or circuitcity had the Mx1000 laser mouse on sale for like $40.. and then get a nice keyboard.. What about a sound card??? My mouse/keyboard setup http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16826104158 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16823109137 Sound card? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16829102188 Speakers? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16836121120
  15. yes and no.. You could use 2 modems.. But it would require another cable line being run into you house.. which you would have to pay for.. and then on top of the install fee.. you would have to purchace another service plan. Then on top of that if you wanted to use both modems.. you are looking at a router that is going to cost up to $200 for the exact same speed. You wouldnt "double" you bandwidth.. If you wanted to do that you are looking in the $1000's for a router.. Long story short... yes it is possible.. but it isnt realistic or practical..
  16. That is a good call.. I have the firewall rule written.. I am about 95% sure that it will work.. however, I am with cholla... More information on the situtation would be helpful before I post what I came up with.. You can either post it here or send a pm to one of the mods.. There are other ways of "figuring" out what she is doing without cutting her internet access.. While we may not go into all of that, as it is kind of a Gray area, cutting someones internet might not be the best thing to do.
  17. hahaha... i dont know if they will waste their time for another sp for xp... Vista is currently top of the list.. and xp will just be patched.. Unless none of the major corperations buy into the vista experience.. kinda what happened with xp and 2000.. 2000 has had like 5 SPs release due to the fact that a lot of companies are still running it as their workstation os.
  18. I am sure that on a reboot it would correct the permissions.. The wikipedia states that If you update to IE7 you can remove it.. I dont know what that means or if it is accurate.. but i guess it would be worth a try if you are willing to use RC1 for a little bit.
  19. It is possible.. there are 4 levels of security on these routers.. 1-3 are pre-programmed and the user selects a level and the correct script is executed.. Level 4 is a custom configuration where you can write your own firewall rules.. http://www.westell.com/content/sales/327W.pdf right around pg57.. So... you would have to write a rule that would disallow outbound and inbound access on * for your ip.. which still means that the ip address is going to need to be static.. I will try and find a guide tonight and write the rule if I can..
  20. It sounds like Ubuntu isnt picking up your monitor or the graphics card correctly.. I has been a little bit since I have booted with ubuntu.. but I think you can select a default monitor LCD or CRT and specify a max resolution. That is what I had to the the last time i booted on my laptop if I remember correctly.. I am going to have to find my live disk.. Alright i booted my SuSE machine into Ubuntu.. look like if you go System-> Preferences-> Screen Resolution.. you should be able to adjust up to the maximum that the software found.. otherwise you are going to have to edit some X settings in the config file.. not a huge deal..
  21. looks like you could write a firewall policy to drop any packets incoming or outgoing.. Disabling lan access is a lot harder to do.. WIth out running some type of authentication server.. If if you assign her a static IP out of the DHCP range is it still going to work.. You are going to have to fudge the address or the subnet mask..
  22. I would check for driver updates... Have you tried TCPoptimizer yet?
  23. X300SE isnt really a graphics card.. It is there low end solution.. you would see a huge difference in the performance.
  24. First what are you advertised speeds? You might want to power cycle the router. Unplug the router for 10 seconds then plug it back in.
  25. I am a fan of the ATI series for video capture.. due to the fact that it isnt just another add-on card. You also get a decent graphics card.
