There are a few more sets then just plugging and chugging.. it is dsl.. so you have to deal with PPPoE.. Before you start this.. when you are using just one computer.. do you have to login to be able to use the internet? I think Verizon still uses PPPoE http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=2210&p_created=1110937569&p_sid=*DyIH*di&p_accessibility=0&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MiZwX3Byb2RzPTAmcF9jYXRzPSZwX3B2PSZwX2N2PSZwX3NlYXJjaF90eXBlPWFuc3dlcnMuc2VhcmNoX25sJnBfc2NmX2xhbmc9MSZwX3BhZ2U9MSZwX3NlYXJjaF90ZXh0PVZlcml6b24*&p_li=&p_topview=1

Very possible.. they would be expanding the backbone... Not everything runs on coax..

1. With a 5mbit cable line being daisychained around, what speeds should I really expect?
The way that Cable internet works it is like a Hub in a sense for a local area network.. On cable everyone shares bandwidth with everyone one else. Also all of your traffic is visible to everyone else.. this isnt as much of a problem due to the encryption and security settings that have been put into place.. but in the early days of cable internet it was possible to set up a file/printer sharing community with other people on you node.. Since you are sharing bandwidth with other house in you area you can expect that is everyone is downloading a movie for the speeds to drop.. Most Cable companies establish caps on their line.. they may or may not be at what they advertised their speeds at. (Comcast for example sets their caps higher than what they offer.. Yet insight sets them right at what they offer because they are having bandwidth / upgrade issues) This way you can not get a whole lot more than what you paid for and if you are downloading something then it keeps it in reason so that there is enough bandwidth to go around. It is rare that you see slow downs do to traffic on the network. Most ISPs keep their network traffic/bandwidth ratio pretty well padded.
2. Are dropoffs common with cable? (I get them alot with DSL of any company) Normally, in my opinion, Cable is more reliable than DSL / phone. The most common issues are signal issues.. that can be adjusted by the cable company.. It happens when they are adding more people to the node.. I have had cable for about 5-6 year and have only had the tech out maybe 4 times.. most of those visits were in the beginning due to signal issues. 3. Is cable speed usually consistant?
see question #1
4. What's involved with setting up a cable connection? (I don't even have cable TV). How much is generally charged, and do the ISPs do it themselves? Most, not all, ISPs offer home install. If you are a cable TV subscriber it can be cheaper but only by like $5-10.. If you are going to require a cable line installed to your house then professional install is going to be needed and that can run anywhere from $50-100 depending on the company.. As far as pricing my Comcast connection (6/384) is $45 and my insight (4/384) is $35.. Hope this helps..

Swimmer replied to maxinnejr's topic in General Discussion
by the time you finish recompressing them they are going to look like crap and be really small like 320x320.. which unless you are putting this on an Ipod or watching them on a 4 inch screen it isnt work the time or the effort.. -
I have yet to get mac filtering to work with the Intel 2200 cards and the DD-WRT v23 on a WRT54g v3 router.. Glad it works for you guys!

Router is hurting my connection. badly.
Swimmer replied to bob12345's topic in Networking and Hardware
I would try the reset like Fallow said.. if that doesnt work... I would reflash the router's firmware.. If things go dissappearing on the router that is a little bit of a consern to me.. I have a WGR614 and things just change all the time.. Has the product ever been stable? -
Alright.. so it is an external PCMCIA wifi card? What model do you have for the card, router, and laptop?

good reading.. then it is a port issue..
-
yeah.. it was released yesterday..

haha.. if it is a new computer.. I would highly recommend reformatting, if you have a copy of windows on a cd, just to get rid of all the extra crap that the manufactures are installing these days.. At that point make sure you get a decent virus/spyware/adware/firewall program and get the updates for windows XP.
-
that is odd.. newegg only ships to the US and Puerto Rico..
-
what type of error are you getting.. Limited or no connectivity? Might want to make sure that the IP addresses, if static like they should be, are not the same as ones already on the network.
-
that might not change anything.. Comcast has direct access to the backbone in chicago..
-
if we are talking about the profile passwords.. I think that does is protect you layout of your browser and maybe your form data, the stuff that you can remember.. otherwise I know that the bookmarks are stored as an html file or an xml file.. i dont remember which..

ssh.. that is the only secure way.. if you want a virtural desktop... you can put VNC over ssh to encrypt the information.. VNC is a huge security risk on a linux server.. Might want to read this if you are going to be hosting.. http://www.testmy.net/forum/t-14923

are you paying for service from earthlink? They should have a self install guide on their website if they allow customers to self install..
