Dude, your OS is messed. Upgrade, reinstall, or continue beating your head against the wall. Your choice, but I'd go with upgrading to, let's see, MAC.
-Check the device manager, to make sure that the drivers are not conflicted for the NIC (should be under network adapters, using the view connections by type)
-What IP address are you getting?
It's a routing issue on the end of your ISP (domain tag). Basically, it shouldn't affect your connection any. As your ISP performs maintenance on nodes/cards, your connection will be traced to other routers due to load balancing. When another shift occurs, you may be routed differently again. Basically it is normal, try not to lose too much sleep over it.
Question: do you still have those 2 bad processes running now?
I had another thought, too.
-click start, run
-type cmd and click ok
-type wmic and hit enter
-type startup and hit enter, to view info on startup items
-type process and hit enter, to see details of processes currently running
You can provide us with a screen shot if you like.
You can program your computer's TCP/IP to only accept 1 IP address (configure statically), but if you are in fact on a dynamic connection (DHCP), this will render your internet useless.
-Control Panel --> network connections
-right-click on local area connection (if hardwired) or wireless connection (if wireless), click properties
-click to highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), click properties
-place a dot where it says Use the following IP address, and put in the appropriate information
OMG THAT'S INSANE!!!!!!!!AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(falls off chair and hits head, begins reciting Latin, rotating head around backwards, stabbing self in crotch, and spewing pea soup)
If you weren't having any problems before the update, then you won't be missing anything in staying with SP1. Just turn off your automatic updates. Is SP2 necessary? No. Is it a good upgrade? There are mixed opinions. Are you seriously at risk using SP1? Yes, but SP2 isn't going to help you with that.
Does this happen on other users too?
Try clicking start, then run, type gpedit.msc, open user configuration, then administrative templates, control panel, display....look around in there for something enabled/disabled.
Depending on where you live, you might be able to get the AOL/Road Runner bundle package. This means that you get a cable connection, but still keep your AOL account active. It's no additional cost for the AOL, you just pay for the cable modem and connection, plus you get the RR account and benefits.
It's made by Ambit....and yep, its a fine modem.
Quick tip: If you have access to the MAC address (should be on a sticker on that modem somewhere), you can use the prefix (the first half, XX-XX-XX) and pop it into the field HERE to find the vendor.
