@Parado I can appreciate your frustrations, as I am sure so many of the rest of us can as well. Until we get a grasp as to how the ISP we are using is actually treating our connection, compared to what we expect, especially when it becomes difficult to brows, as many of us have had that issue.

Summer months for myself can be taxing, and I'm not always as available here as I'd like to be. It seems many people ignore working machines, which act as 'dust filters' , collecting anything which the fans run through. Once the heat of the season hits, electronics explain the importance of regular cleanings when the system thermal settings are hit.

Just left a small companies datacenter where no filtration system was utilized other than what went through the rest of the office, three racks of servers 3/4 filled was a daunting cleaning task. I would have pics but the HR gal was adamant about not letting it out. I literally filled three office waste bags from the shop vac out of the servers themselves, and a good bit more from under and around the racks. The duct had not been cleaned in a millennia, took me 10 minutes just to pull the packed filter out.

Test run on the Irish Three 4G network in Donegal town, possibly LTE+ (OnePlus 2 phone):

It's also my fastest TestMy download result to date, certainly did not expect to see my first >100Mbps result on a cellular network, let alone the Three network especially with the past experience of prioritising/throttling ports.  As far as I can tell, they treat port 80 and 8080 equally now and the above test was a normal linear HTTP test with the UK server.

mudmanc4 reacted to Assassin5150 in What is speed test actually measuring
You are measuring the speed from your device (pc,tablet, phone) to the test server. The ip address you are seeing is the static IP given to you by your ISP. No you cannot connect directly to their server to test your speed unless they put up a test server. The point of doing a speed test it too see if you are getting the bandwidth you are paying for from your Isp or to help you figure out local network issues.

    Hi Mudmanc4,

    Update:

I had a comcast tech come out, and I don't know how much of what he said was right/wrong but his basic message was: "I should rent a modem/router combo from them because the owned ones don't get updated right so you have to buy a new one at $200 a pop every 2 years anyways so you're not saving money, but if you don't want to do that buy the Netgear AC1900 router/broadband modem combo "nighthawk", also Comcast and Linksys don't get along and we have problems with the Arris modems too".

Since the Nighthawk was cheaper in total than the modem + router I recently bought, and I didn't want to argue about the fact I had a Zoom modem and Asus router before with the same problem, I decided to return the arris and linksys and get the nighthawk instead.

I plugged it in and have it all fired up. Over wired connection this was my speed:

    Wired:

    Wireless 2.4 Ghz Laptop 1:

    Wireless 5 Ghz Galaxy S5:
    122.9 Mbps and 7.8 Mbps

The second laptop gets similar results as my first laptop on 2.4 ghz and similar results as my phone on 5 ghz. This leads me to believe that the 2.4 Ghz band is the problem (which I don't doubt given I live in a suburb with at least 15 other wifi signals available to me and probably a bunch more 2.4 ghz noise interference) with that and that there must have been some connectivity issue between my router and modem that is now resolved with it being a combo unit. I can only assume that you were right and that the cat 5e cable was the issue, but stupid me I ordered those cables without prime shipping but ordered the combo unit with prime so the cables aren't here yet for me to test.

Thanks again for all of your help and I really love this site to get accurate information about my issues. For now I think I am going to count my blessings that I can get close enough to my advertised speeds on everything but 2.4 ghz and worry about that at another time, since I suspect I can't fix it.

Testing any connection this way uses the allocated data. The data provided to your specific contract with the service provider.

After the test is over, it's over. Therefore no choking of the connection.

Now during the test procedure, it is recommended to eliminate all other sources of internal throughput, under normal tests.

mudmanc4 reacted to spypet in PSA: enable QoS to lower Latency since 11/15/2016
in april 2016 and again november 2016, twcable maxx and charter customers may have noticed their isp server being over provisioned.  IMHO this is a marketing gimmick to allow you to "speedtest" 15-20% faster - but at an unstable high latency speed.    if your router's quality of service is disabled, and you are now seeing wired speedtests on your 50/5(60/6) service at 70/6 (or double this on double speed 100/10 tiers)  I would strongly recommend you enable QoS and set it closer to 60/6 (about 15-20% below peek speedtest).  this will lower the speedtest reads, but it will also lower your Latency back down to where it should be.  lower latency during peek bursts of speed will benefit twitch gamers and lower the error re-transmission rate needed by bulk down-loaders.  if you can't enable your QoS, but use a torrent or download client, you may want to at least cap the download rate within these clients 20% below your top speedtest.

Question: Is the new cable 'cat5' connected to a LAN port or the WAN port on the wireless node?  Your attempts to access the admin side might be triggering  a 'rebinding attack'. So it will redirect to a nulled page or error out depending.

You'll most likely be required to connect directly to the wireless node to access the admin panel, depending on how it was set up.

You have no idea! We've watched Seinfeld for years, repeat after repeat. Love the obvious. Which obscures the masses.

None the less, is the Westel wired or a repeater? I will say you point out the obvious as wired, but I have to ask, otherwise this could account for the high latency between the two , see?

    Westel model number please?
I don't intend to be so pedantic, but it is important to know what the device capabilities are to determine if there is a 'better' or more efficient or 'proper' configuration for the specific depth of the layout.

And why is the Westel necessary in any event? Unless it is acting as a 'dummy' or hub to connect other devices.

Is it possible to get the topology of your network, in other words:

    Modem---> switch --> windows machine

Or Modem --> switch --> switch --> XP windows machine
                               |
                           windows 10 machine

It all good, we should have the above before at least myself, has a better understanding of the layout.

Also, when referring to the 'node', this could mean any number of network 'devices' in the path, a switch, a router, to keep it simple, it's a 'hop' that must be traveled to reach the destination. Which is what the tracrt shows, each 'hop' from 'node to node' is showing the 'latency' or speed / time to reach there and back divided by 2.

ok no problem, lets simplify this.
Take one machine out of the discussion momentary.

Is there one of th[e] two machines which can be connected to either or internal 'nodes' or switches as you are referring to?
If so lets use that one to test each 'switch or node'

The nodes that timed out are not always abnormal, it's simply the 'security' setup to not respond.

What is more concerning appears to be the XP box, where the 10 box has not this issue.
Yet you are getting the same test results from both machines, correct me?

Many times DSL will take up to even more than a week to 'auto adjust', run a few more tests now that a few days have passed.

And remember, when getting a new DSL modem, leave it powered up for at least a week or so, try not resetting or anything.

Your problem might not be your local ISP. Since they have to connect across the country you are at the mercy of every connection made and every node you pass through. They have control over everything until they hand it off to the Internet backbone and then all bets are off, It can go anywhere. I live 70 miles south of Portland, but to get to the Portland Netfix server, I go though Seattle and sometimes San Jose.

Also you have time of day that affects speed. Imagine as everyone comes home, has supper and kicks back to stream their favorite show. It starts first on the East  Coast and the load picks up as you move West. 7PM is the worst, the whole country is streaming and unless the server is in your back yard you are in trouble.

Try your test against multiple test sites and time of day. You will see a wide variance the further away you are from "home" and the time of day.
