  1. No. I have Vista running on two computer right now with no problems and no crashes. I run the Vista firewall / Avg Free anti-virus 8.0 / Spybot Search &Destroy that it and have not had any virus or spyware on either computer. There is also open source program for Windows too.. As for deleting something I use a program call Eraser. All I have to do is right click the folder, than click on Eraser. As for security,If I get real paranoid about a web site I am going to I just use my laptop which is dual booted with Linux and buy the way all of the software program I use are free. Just like Dark06 said I to like to have some control over my computer and I also agree with Tommy, I can not see were Mac are worth the extra money if all I do is surf the web and play games with the computer. If I want something that look good I will buy a Car, Truck or MC , not a computer.
  2. What monitor is he using. He can try lowing the resolution on the monitor, less strain on the video card. Also check to make sure the video card is not overheating, He may have to clean out the vents. The card is not overclock, that too can cause it to freeze.
  3. We are going to need more information first. Did you built it or have someone custom built it for you. If it is a computer built by a manufacture odds are you will not be able to overclock it, because they lock you out of the BIOS setting that you need to overclock. Even if you can overclock it I do not think you will be able to get it up to 3.0 MHZ with stock cooling. My 4400+ [ socket 939 ] only got up to 2.7 MHz with a after market cooler on it.
  4. I need three selection. This is my advertised speed 768 / 8000.with power boost. What I am getting right now is 816 / 5241 with power boost [most of the time the download speed is not even up to 4000 during the day ]. What I get between midnight and 9:00 AM is 1418 / 11020 with power boost. This computer is running Vista,so there is no tweaking being done. ::.. testmy.net test results ..::: Download Connection is:: 5241 Kbps about 5.24 Mbps (tested with 12288 kB) Download Speed is:: 640 kB/s Upload Connection is:: 816 Kbps about 0.8 Mbps (tested with 1496 kB) Upload Speed is:: 100 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net (Main) Test Time:: 2008/05/27 - 1:57pm D-Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-T0W7DBEYR U-Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-QW4N9FIUR User Agent:: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.8.1.14) Gecko/20080404 Firefox/2.0.0.14 This is the speed of my XP box with cablenut tweaking right now. 5. Are you running XP or Vista ? Have you try running any virus scan yet ? Here is a online one you can try. http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
  6. They are the drivers needed to run a Nvidia graphic card.
  7. I would go with the 8800GT for under $200.00 that is your best bang for the buck
  8. Do what Coknuck said first to make sure you are running at 1440X900. If I were you I would go with a 8800GT. Newegg has them for under $200.00 EDit - In Vista you right click the desktop / click on Personalize / click on Display Setting
  9. What monitor are you running and what is the resolution that it is set to.
  10. Are you going to be gaming on this computer? If you are what games do you like. The 8800GT is probably the best bang for the bucks right now. Nvidia and ATI should be coming out with new cards soon [ June or July I think ] . As for lasting a long time video cards get out dated real fast, they will work but you may have to turn down the eye candy to get the game to run right.
  11. You will also want to check out the power supply in that computer. Nvidia has a min 12 volt rail requirement for their cards and a min total watt for the whole computer. 8800 GT- 400watt / 26A on the 12 volt rail 8800GTS [ G92 ] - 425 watt / 28A on the 12 volt rail 8800GTX - 450 watt / 30A on the 12 volt rail
  12. I use Rivatuner to oc my video card You can give that a try, just make sure you DO NOT check the box that says start with windows. That way if your overclock is to much all you have to do is reboot. Also when you OC your video card raise it +2 and only do the gpu first then do the memory.Make sure you keep a eye on the temperature of the card,It can climb up real fast when you are gaming. As for the ram leave it alone. You will have more problems then it worth. I OC my X3350 to 3504MHZ but my ram is still running 1:1 with the FSB. Click on the CPU-z banner in my sig it will show you my OC. By keeping the ram at 1:1 my ram is actually underclocked it running at 876 instead of 1066. By doing this I was able to tighten the timing from 5-5-5-20 to 4-4-4-10.
  13. I have not had any time to mess with it yet. I do have my laptop dual booted with Vista 64 and Mandriva right now. I like Mandriva, I just can't get the wireless to work on it. When it come to Linux I am a noob and now that I am back to work I do not have the time to mess with it.
  14. I am no expert when it come to Vista ,so correct me if I am wrong. I am running Vista Ultimate 64-bit on my desktop. I have had no problem installing any software program that I wanted to use. The 32-bit programs go in to a separate program files folder called Program Files[x86]. As far I know Vista 64 runs them in 32-bit.
  15. Mudmanc4 Did you get this problem solved? I can not even get the Fedora-9 live CD to boot off the CD. It keeps asking for a Login & Password. Is there a default Login & Password?
  16. Is it a laptop or desktop. You have a link to the manufacturers web site.
  17. It should tell you in the device manger. Click on Display adapters. What OS are you running
  18. You have to get the drivers from the maker of the video card that is installed in the computer. Who made the computer that you have. What is the model number.
  19. Here is the driver download page for the 82865G graphic controller. http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=1044
  20. I have Comcast too. I get really bad speed test from 9 AM to around Midnight. Just too many people on the same line. I don't think there is any thing you can do to improve your speed. You can call Comcast, but they are only going to give you the run around. I am waiting for the day that FIOS comes to my town. Then Comcast is done!
  21. I have Vista SP-1 on two computer with no problems. The first is on my new laptop, it came with Vista SP-1 64 bit. The second copy I put on the computer I built. It also has Vista SP-1 64 bit . The computer that I built has a Creative SB X-FI sound card in it and a Nvidia 9800x2 graphic card. Both are working with no problems. I download Vista SP-1 for the second computer from Microsoft stand alone update page.
  22. OK I understand now. That is most likely what I did. So I am getting ready to do a fresh install of Mandriva.
  23. What do you mean by another module.
  24. ndiswrapper is not working for me. I keep getting a error. [unable to find the diswrapper interface ] I have it check off in the software management, is there something else I have to do.
  25. Thanks for the reply. I am still using Mandriva. The bug I was getting in Firefox has disappeared. I am now trying to figure out how to get my Broadcom wireless to work.
