Well.. that is a great little project... It really comes down to your comfort level of computers.. If you are willing to spend the time and really learn what is going on.. Or do you want something that you can just throw up and say there it is done.. With a 550MHz machine SuSE will run fine on it. You can enable SAMBA, the most accepted network file sharing utility, and you will have a rock solid network share. Cost.. little to nothing.. You dont really need a KVM switch as SuSE has a remote desktop app built in if you install KDE or Gnome. So you can point your web browser to the correct port, I think it is 5201.. and you have a graphic view of what it going on with the box.. As far as the difficulty.. It isnt to hard to get up and running.. SAMBA ships with SWAT the web interface for setting up shares. It is just a matter of adding users to the shares. From there you are going to want to map the folders as drives to the host machines. Again not too hard but can be tricky depending on how long it takes for windows see the linux box on your work group. I know of a few Linux variants that offer file sharing suites.. I will post them a bit later as I am not on my personal machine. As far as going with Windows XP for this solution.. I would try to stay away if at all possible. I have had good experiences with trying to do this on XP and then I have had ones where it never works. If you want to spend a few $ you can get Server 2003... With would allow you to create a domain and do all of the fancy things that companies do.. I currently have a SuSE 10.2 server sitting in IL acting as a file server for my parents.. I more performs backups now... If you have any questions feel free to ask.. @Shug.. Linux all the way baby

Vista.. the latest and "greatest" operating system for Microsoft.. It was launched Jan 31st..
-
I have a feeling that this is a little wrong.. they are giving Tbps as the measure of speed.. There is no technology that I know of that can transmit at that speed much less PCI-E or PCI..
-
It isnt really worth it to run the beta version of vista now.. they are not going to patch them and considering that poeple are already finding exploits on the retail version who know what kind of crap your system would be subjected to..

ISP Database Project Suggestions/Ideas
Swimmer replied to Swimmer's topic in Ideas to make testmy.net better?
Alright I have found a way to implement that... Basically a if an ISP offers any package and you enter your zipcode that package will come up as a possibility. It is going to be based on what is offered in the state and not necessarily based on what is available. -
One more thing i need.. ping testmy.net with the following command ping -n 15 testmy.net and paste the results.. and any known states of service..

Well seeing as there are other having issues.. I wouldn't be to worried about it right now.. As long as the wireless work.. If something really changes like it stops working then yeah there is something really wrong. See as the first Service Pack for vista is due out second half of 2007.. My guess is one of the main things that they are going to be patching is going to be the network stack in general. If enough people are having problems then I am sure that MS know about it.

Was it a visioneer 7200? As far as driver support it is going to be hit or miss... Depending if the company allowed MS to bundle the Driver into XP it might work... He would have to find a program that would manage his scans..

You can get close... I was able to take a 3mb file and get it down to 64.94kb.. If that works just adjust the quality level in photoshop when you do save for web..

Best video editing for the consumer: http://www.pinnaclesys.com/PublicSite/us/Products/Consumer+Products/Home+Video/Studio+Family/ download the trial.. I was hooked.. As far as burning I would go with Nero Ultra also.. Just easy for the beginner but also can do all the fancy advanced things.. Plus it has the Nero name.. System backup.. That it a good question.. There are many ways of doing this.. Personally I have western digital that run their free software, which I got through a class action suit , and it automatically does the backups for me.

The wireless strength indicator may not change once the signal is locked on... you can download Wifi stumbler and run that to check and see if it is a driver issue.. I am going to guess not.. I am more inclined to think that it is that someone forgot to add the code that updates the wireless signal indicator.

That is one of the things that we need to do.. We need MORE people to sign up and post. The more people the more interesting things will be. As far as being one of the bests site on the net.. I would agree 100%. The way the site is run, maintained, and developed is all top notch. I have been on other site's admin teams as this is by far the easiest site to work on/with. I promise you that there are some project in the work that will make you think that this is the best site of all time.. Just wait..

What is the Network Control control Rule 14? Is that something that you implemented after you discovered the attack? Just post what the rule is.. I cant find the rules that are default in the manual.. Both address are coming from overseas.. so there isnt all that much you can do.. That being said update your anti-spyware software, reboot into safemode without networking, and run a scan. I would recommend running spybot and adaware.. It might be a trojan trying to communicate out but the incoming traffic is getting picked up by the firewall.
